IN SEARCH OF A TRAINER FOR
YOUR HORSE?
Finding a capable trainer is what we want!!!
Before we consider the monetary investment, the horse’s future, health
and well being is our utmost concern.
Suggestions for finding a qualified
trainer: You should begin by asking
other owners and breeders opinion on trainers. Your questions might
include; the trainers credentials, his history, his repor with horses,
his experience, and his knowledge of the breed (and his formal training
as a trainer).
A trainer’s history is important because you need to know if
he respects and handles horses as a gentle master. You
want to make sure he takes care in his training to take the horse safely
through the stages of training. Does the trainer have a history of using
quality feed and keeping the horses in good physical condition?
A good rider does not qualify as person
to be a good trainer. People make the mistake of sending their horse
to a person they have observed being a good rider, but has little ability,
credentials or training skills to train your horse. A good rider
is by far easier to achieve than that of being a good trainer.
CREDIBILITY, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE ARE
PARAMOUNT I personally started with the best of the best, Mr. Rick
Daniels. Rick Daniels trained with the traditional Peruvian training
and used his natural horsemanship to enhance their methods. He has been
retired from training for a long time. Through the years I have made
quite a journey in my quest for another superior trainer. I learned
some serious lessons for me and my horses. So I thought I would share
some things I thought might be interesting to others.
Traditional Peruvian trainers are becoming
a rare breed. To become a true traditional trainer it takes years
of training, discipline, and sacrifice on his part to achieve this status.
There are few maestro trainers. Not widely known, is to achieve
this status as a maestro trainer, only a recognized old maestro master
may declare a person to the coveted status. You can ask the trainer
when, where, and from whom their trainer achieved this status from.
It is an interesting process and a topic of discussion.
Many zealous owners/breeders advertise their resident trainer as maestro
or master trainers.
The trainers experience is essential. The more expertise the trainer,
the less injuries and problems you and your horse will have to deal
with.
The training of your horse can be a wonderful experience for your
horse and for you. Choose a trainer that will make it so. The good
trainers spend hours with the horses on a one to one basis. These trainers
probably know your horses better than you may know them. Ask the trainer
about bloodlines, their strengths, weaknesses, and the good and bad
traits of the bloodline your are interested in. Many people are able
to talk bloodlines, but are they knowledgeable?
When an owner and trainer share the same ideas of the finished
product, philosophy of how to get there, expectations for the horses,
the love of the Peruvian horse; exciting things happen.
